Commercial Water Heater Installation Tips

Codes for a Water Heater

In an ideal world, commercial water heater installation needs to be done near gas or electric service and where the water supply and distribution lines are easily installed. Ventilation is also easier to achieve when a unit is next to an exterior wall. Water heaters can be installed anywhere, however, only if they are electric, direct vent, or a sealed combustion chamber unit.

Closet Doors

Closets are required by lawn to have doors when water heaters are installed in them and these doors are not allowed to be left open. The doors must be able to open and close easily, and must close and latch by themselves when they are left unattended.

Air Circulation

Water heaters must have a certain amount of clearance in order to work properly and safely. A clearance of 12 inches is needed on every side, and a certain amount of airflow is also needed for the proper combustion and ventilation. Building codes state that proper airflow must be provided in accordance to the manufacturer’s instructions when the unit is being installed.

Seismic Straps

During an earthquake, it is natural that a water heater will shift, which has the potential for causing water and gas leaks, in addition to electrical damage. To avoid this, water heater bracing straps have to be installed in areas that are prone to earthquakes. Each unit has to be held in place with two straps, one on the top third of the unit, and the other on the bottom third. These straps have to be at least 4 inches away from the heater controls. Flexible connection hoses are also needed when connecting units to both gas and water supplies in seismic zones.
