Fall Plumbing Repair Tips

Basic Plumbing Maintenance Tips for Your Home This Fall

When temperatures begin to drop significantly, your plumbing is often affected, so if you do not do everything possible to ensure your pipes are protected, then plumbing repair will be needed eventually. Below are a few basic plumbing maintenance tips that you need to try to ensure this does not happen.

Checking Faucets

Now is the best time to inspect every faucet for possible leaks or drips. If you find any, make sure you have them repaired before winter comes. Inspect your shower head for any damaged parts and leaks, in addition to checking plumbing fixtures on the toilet. Leaky plumbing fixtures will mean wasting precious water, in addition to causing a spike in your bill.

Examining Exterior Faucets for Leaks or Drips

Because water that is left in a plumbing line does freeze, it can result in considerable damage to your plumbing, so make sure you check exterior faucets to see if they are leaking or dripping. And, make sure you switch off exterior faucets, in addition to turning off their interior valve.

Drain and Remove Garden Hoses

In addition to draining garden hoses, put them safely away in your garage so they will last longer. If you fail to drain your hoses, and if any water remains inside them, they will freeze and expand, which means that come the summer, you will need to invest in a new hose.

Check Pipe Insulation

Without the proper insulation, both your interior and exterior pipes will freeze and possibly burst. So make sure you give them a thorough inspection, this should include pipes in your garage. To be sure all of them have sufficient insulation, call in a licensed plumber to examine them, and if deemed necessary, add insulation.
