If you are wondering how to perform shower drain replacement without having to tear open the ceiling below. You will need to use a special drain assembly to install it from the top. Read on to find out more on how to do this, and what tools you will need if you decide to go down the DIY route.
If you are dealing with a leaky shower drain and have no wish to rip open a finished ceiling in order to get at it from below, you need to consider using a special drain such as the WingTite Drain. This can be installed from above if the drain is placed in either a plastic or fiberglass shower base. This drain will come with O-rings that will seal to an average 2-in. ABS or PVC drainpipe, and there are also adapters available for 1-1/2-in. and 2-in. copper pipe). Four “wings” will flip out beneath the shower base and clamp the drain firmly in place. The job will take approximately 30 minutes and doesn’t need any special plumbing tools.
Removing Shower Drain Cover
The hardest part of this job is removing the old drain flange. You may have to cut it with a hacksaw blade and then pry it loose in pieces from the shower pan. Just remember to leave the existing drainpipe in place. The WingTite Drain will slip over the drainpipe and an O-ring will effectively seal it. Apply silicone sealant to underbelly of the drain flange to seal to the shower base completely. A stainless cover will fit over the top.
