Sump Pump Installation Tips
When gutters cease to direct water away from your foundations or landscape, it has nowhere to go except into your basement. So fixing any basement leaks will be your best line of defense. However, you usually don’t know if you have them until they occur, and if that happens, then a sump pump installation is your best course of action.
If your house sits on a flat or in a low-lying plot, which is below the natural water table, then a sump pump is ideal. Even if you think your home was sealed properly, water will always find a way in where you wouldn’t expect. Sump pumps can remove water from your home and discharge it away from the foundations.
How to Install a Sump Pump
Ideally, your sump pump basin must be placed in the lowest-lying location in the basement, so that the water will naturally flow there. This can be done by sight as much as possible, or, you can use a level. When possible, this spot needs to be close to an exterior wall for easier placement and close to a GFCI electrical outlet so you can plug in the pump. Also, check this location can accommodate the installation of the pump’s discharge pipes, to a spot away from the foundation or into a nearby drain, if local codes permit this.
Safety Alerts!
Speak to your local municipality about any codes or regulations for this kind of project and if you need a permit to do the work. Find out where the sewer pipes and other utility lines are if they run under your foundation. You will be breaking up concrete in your basement and digging into the ground beneath; so you don’t want to break into any pipes and cause a bigger, and possibly cause a potentially dangerous problem.
