Shower Drain Replacement

Mastering the Art of Shower Drain Replacement

Step-by-Step Guide to Replacing Your Shower Drain

If you’ve noticed standing water in your shower or a drain that just isn’t working as well as it used to, it may be time for a shower drain replacement. While it might seem daunting, with the right tools and guidance, replacing your shower drain can be a straightforward DIY task that saves you money and improves the functionality of your bathroom. Before you dive into the project, you’ll need to gather some essential tools and materials. Ensure you have a new shower drain, plumbers’ putty, a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench, and potentially a drain removal tool depending on the type of drain you have. With these at hand, you’re ready to tackle the job.

The Removal Process

The first step is removing the old shower drain. Start by unscrewing any visible screws on the drain cover and set them aside safely. If there’s a strainer in place, lift it out too. You may encounter some resistance due to years of soap build-up and corrosion, but don’t be discouraged – careful wiggling and manipulation will usually free up the parts. Once the top portion is removed, you’ll see the body of the drain that fits into the pipe below. This is when your adjustable wrench or drain removal tool comes into play. Fit it into or onto the body of the drain and turn counterclockwise – remember “lefty loosey.” After unscrewing, clean any residue from around the pipe before proceeding to install your new drain.

Installing The New Shower Drain

Installing your new shower drain starts with applying plumbers’ putty around its base. Press it firmly in place ensuring a watertight seal between the new drain body and your shower floor. Screw in any screws that came with your new unit and wipe away excess putty. Allow adequate time for everything to set before testing your newly installed shower drain with water.
