Fact or Fiction? Home Plumbing Myths That Could Cost You
A home’s plumbing system is often taken for granted, just as long as the likes of sinks and toilets work smoothly and your water heater doesn’t make any strange rumbling, popping, and banging noises? Well, some of those statements are correct and some are not. Knowing the difference between the following plumbing myths and the facts could make your life easier and save you money on costly plumbing repair jobs.
Tablets containing bleach are safe for the toilet
The answer to this myth is a definite no. While you can pour bleach into the basin to clean it, never use tablets that contain bleach in the tank. As this will eventually degrade the components of the toilet.
Flushable wipes are not safe for the toilet
You have probably heard before that flushable wipes are not safe to be flushed down the toilet. While other items, like feminine hygiene products, paper towels, or ear swabs, are not meant to be flushed, the fact is, that flushable wipes are specifically made to be flushed down the toilet. That is, flushable wipes are safe for the sewer lines and plumbing.
Banging or rumbling water heaters will eventually blow up
If your water heater starts to make rumbling, banging, and popping sounds, there is no cause for alarm or danger of it exploding. The phenomenon behind a grumbling water heater is due to the heating elements at the bottom of the tank that often creates bubbles. The bubbles will rise through the layers of sediment and buildup. This is what causes the noise.
That being said, while a noisy water heater is not a sign of impending doom, it does mean that it needs servicing by a professional plumber such as JP & DC LLC that will clean the tank and check all the components.
